EWARDS AFB, CA - REPAIR FIRE SYSTEMS DEFICIENCIES PROJECT |
Contract Number: W912PL-09-D-0043, Task Order 0002
Contract Progress: 80%
Contract Value: $1, 963,394.00
Summary:
Edwards AFB, located in the Mojave Desert 100 miles north of Los Angeles has been the premier Flight Test Center for over sixty years. Every modern fighter, bomber, transport aircraft and un-manned aircraft in the USAF inventory has been tested here at one time. Additionally, NASA performs various aeronautical testing here and uses the 15,000 foot concrete runway as back-up landing for the shuttle. Alpine Diversified, Inc. is tasked to upgrade and install new Fire Alarm and Fire Suppression systems at various buildings and hangers supporting these EAFB missions. Our qualified Team of engineers and technical support personnel have installed and successfully tested a complete fire alarm system in one of the largest complexes on the Base. Performing most of the work at night, thousands of feet of conduit and wire were placed throughout this facility to minimize the disturbance to the occupants. Testing of the entire fire alarm system was accomplished during one Saturday with the EAFB Fire Department signing the NFPA Form 74 that same afternoon!
At other EAFB administrative facilities and hangers Alpine Diversified, Inc’s Team has installed and tested complete wet Fire Suppression Systems. In three hangers that support F-22 missions 24/7, our Specialty Team of AFFF (Foam Fire Suppression) Techs worked closely with the Facility Manager to ensure there were no disruptions to critical flight operations during the testing of Foam Fire Suppression systems.
Scheduling is an important factor when working real-time mission support at Edwards AFB and Alpine Diversified, Inc. has stepped up to the challenge. We are currently planning the final phases for this multi-faceted project and anticipate completion in the fall of 2011.

EDWARDS AFB, CA - WATERLINES PROJECT |
Contract Number: W912PL-10-D-0055, Task Order 0001, MC Waterline AFRL
Customer: USACE, Los Angeles Area, Palmdale Division, EAFB Resident Office, Jackie Abbott USACE Representative
Contract Progress: 100%
Contract Value: $654,478.00
Summary:
Alpine Diversified, Inc. tasked to combine three separate waterlines, run over 5,000 feet of C-900 6 and 8 inch PVC pipe add appropriate check valves, gate valves, fittings and wet taps all to provide sufficient volume and pressure to an existing Fire Suppression System in a solid rocket motor propellant facility was a daunting endeavor. Combine this with some of the most remote desert area at the Edwards AFB Rocket Lab also known as the “Rock” and you have a project that showcased our Team’s Talent to get it done! Crucial to this project was to ensure all Team Members security clearances were obtained and each person properly trained before starting work at this high security facility. Training of our workforce by both Alpine Diversified, Inc. and the USAF Rocket Lab Safety personnel were scheduled at mobilization of the project. This maintained our customer’s requirement to get ahead of other projects that overlapped in our work zone. Combining Alpine’s administrative strength with our performance proven sub-contractors our Team provided the customer with more than what was asked – project complete 3 months ahead of schedule!
Some of the unique hazards our group encountered while trenching and laying pipe for this task: crossing a railroad spur and roadway, high pressure natural gas and high pressure (6,000 psi) nitrogen lines as well as fractured granite found during most of the trenching (hence the Rock designation). All hazards were approached by Alpine’s Team with a zero incident or accident frame of mind. Activity Hazard Analysis were prepared and discussed with every team member before each new project task was started.
Safety is always the number 1 consideration for Alpine Diversified, Inc. in all of our projects and we completed this task without any accident or incident.

EDWARDS AFB, CA - HVAC PROJECT |
Contract Number: W912PL-09-D-0043, Task Order 0001, RPR HVAC Building 2660
Contract Progress: 100%
Contract Value: $921,499.00
Summary:
The Edwards AFB Theater built around 1956 has been a central part of EAFB History. Current movies have been shown for the enjoyment of active service personnel and their families living at this remote desert location. Briefings are held there occasionally to base staff members and award ceremonies use the theater’s capability to seat 600 people. State of the art movie projection and sound systems are employed. The air conditioning and air handling systems however were still the same systems that were installed in 1956!
Alpine Diversified, Inc.’s task to upgrade the EAFB Theater Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems to more efficient (i.e. less power consumption) and use Ice Bank Technology to store energy for non-peak use at the Theater and 2 other buildings was not previously done at this high desert AF Base. Envisioned by our customer was placing new HVAC systems to accommodate Title 24 requirements. Alpine Diversified, Inc. added value to the Base Theater Project by supplying the electrical engineering analysis that showed an upgrade to the existing electrical systems was in order. A 225kVA transformer using environmental friendly cooling oil was strategically placed. An external 440 Volt switch panel was also added by Alpine to compliment the new air handling system requirements.
Key to the success of this project was the scheduling of the removal of asbestos pipe lagging, the old HVAC systems, the installation of new electrical service, the installation of the new ICE Bank, associated piping and the installation of new air handler and chiller. Our customer demanded the Theater be back up and operating with the new system providing chilled air before a critical Commander’s Call Meeting just 60 days from breaking ground. Working closely with our Team Members we had the HVAC systems and the Ice Bank working ahead of the critical meeting. In fact temperature readings just hours prior to the scheduled meeting showed 48° chilled air was being distributed into the Theater – this in the middle of the summer. Mission Accomplished!
Team Alpine provided the qualified engineering, proven mechanical system providers and installation technicians, electricians and high voltage workers, the trenching laborers and soils experts to give the EAFB Theater new life and another 55 years of service.
